What Oak Ridge Requires Before You Fence

Oak Ridge has clear rules for fences. Here is what you need to know before you build, and who to call.

Bryant Fence of Oak Ridge

Quick Reference

Yes, Oak Ridge Requires a Zoning Permit for Fences

Oak Ridge is stricter than many towns nearby. It wants a zoning permit before a new fence goes up in city limits. The building permit is waived for fences 7 feet or shorter, but the zoning permit still applies.

Before you build, make sure your plan fits these points:

  • N
Apply for the city zoning permit.
  • N
Keep front yard fences 4 feet or lower.
  • N
Keep side and back fences 7 feet or lower
  • N
Skip barbed wire, razor wire and electric fence on homes.
  • N
In a historic overlay, get a Certificate of Appropriateness first.
  • N
Book TN 811 before digging. We handle that call.

TN 811: Always Call Before You Dig

This one isn't optional. Before anyone digs fence-post holes in Tennessee, underground utilities must be located and marked. It's free, it's the law, and it prevents dangerous, expensive strikes on gas, electric, water and communication lines.

  • Contact Tennessee 811 by dialing 811 (or 1-800-351-1111) at least a few business days before digging.
  • Utility companies come out and mark their lines with paint and flags, at no cost to you.
  • We coordinate the 811 request and schedule around the markings for every job.

Oak Ridge Spans Two Counties

Most of Oak Ridge is in Anderson County, but the west end reaches into Roane County. Inside city limits, the City of Oak Ridge rules apply either way. Outside city limits, the county rules take over.

Old Lots, Old Lines

Many Oak Ridge lots were laid out in the 1940s. Old fences, hedges and walls don't always sit on the true line. Check your plat, or hire a surveyor if you are not sure. Bryant Fence does not do surveys, but we will tell you when one is a smart idea.

Historic Homes

Oak Ridge is home to many Manhattan Project era houses, like cemesto and alphabet houses. If your home sits in a historic overlay, you need a Certificate of Appropriateness before the permit. Picket and low aluminum fences often fit these homes best.

HOAs

Newer neighborhoods like Groves Park, Harbour Pointe and The Preserve may have HOA rules on style, color and height. Get HOA approval in writing first.
